Chimney re-build

Updated: Feb 11

This is what can happen when a chimney is not flashed the first time. The truss was rotten and compromised, the plywood was dry rotted, and we had to add framing that was missing. Notice the black strip of water shield around the chimney before adding the flashing, it is rolled up on the chimney and laps on top of a shingle so any water would be forced back on top of the shingles.

These are the steps of re-roofing, re-flashing and counterflashing the chimney. The first step is to grind a line in the brick for the counterflashing to snap into, just high enough to cover the older metal flashing that was not functional. Next, we custom made the flashing kit to fit this chimney exactly. Then we installed the flashing, notice how tight our corner is, no water will ever get in there. Last but not least we snapped the counterflashing in, notice how tight and perfect it snapped in before we put the finishing touch, a bead of roof sealant.

We would consider this re-build to be our standard in flashing and counterflashing.
